🐾 August is Clear the Shelters Month! 🐾

This August, the For the Love of Dogs team is highlighting some incredible dogs who need just a little extra—extra patience, extra space, extra love, and maybe a few extra tennis balls or pool days—to thrive.

Some of these faces, like Bonnie, Murray, Charlie, and Riddler may already be familiar from past blog features. Others are brand new. All of them are volunteer and staff favorites who have been waiting far too long for their forever homes.

These dogs aren’t “difficult”—they’re simply specific in what they need. The adoption counselors are committed to setting every match up for success by guiding potential adopters on each dog’s preferences and requirements:

  • If a dog is listed as no cats, the home should be cat-free.
  • If a dog does best with no small children, the match should reflect that.
  • If a dog needs to be the only dog, they’ll thrive in a home where they don’t have to share the spotlight.
  • If a dog requires a low-traffic home—maybe with a single person or a quiet household—that match is key, especially for seniors who just want to Netflix-and-chill.
  • While some pups are couch companions, others are all about swimming, ball-chasing, and active adventures—matching energy levels matters.
  • If a dog has resource-guarding behaviors or trust to build, staff will walk adopters through strategies to work with them.

Patience Pays Off: The 3-3-3 Rule

Adjusting to a new home takes time—especially for dogs who’ve been in a shelter environment. Many shelter dogs follow what’s known as the 3-3-3 rule during adoption:

  • 3 days to decompress and start feeling safe
  • 3 weeks to settle in and learn the routine
  • 3 months to feel completely at home and bonded

This timeline isn’t set in stone—every dog is different—but it’s a helpful reminder to give them space, consistency, and understanding as they transition.

Some dogs may require multiple meet-and-greet visits before heading home. This isn’t a red flag—it’s simply part of ensuring the dog feels safe and confident with the new family.

For those who have been in the shelter for many months—or even years—this move is a big transition. Yet time and again, staff and volunteers have seen these dogs flourish when given patience, structure, and love, returning that devotion tenfold to the families who give them a chance.
