Manatee County Animal Welfare currently has 109 adoptable dogs, and 36 of them are seniors. That means one out of every three dogs at the shelter is over seven years old. Even more difficult to accept is that 11 percent of those seniors have been in the shelter for more than two years. These dogs need stable, safe, loving homes, and shelter life can be especially hard on our oldest residents. They deserve a chance to spend their remaining years in comfort, not in a stressful kennel environment.

Why Senior Dogs Matter
Senior dogs can offer steady companionship, calm energy, and predictable, loving personalities.
An adoption consultant at the shelter can help you select the senior pet that is the best fit for your lifestyle.
The Reality of Shelters for Senior Dogs
For older dogs, shelter environments can be especially tough. Loud noises, unfamiliar routines, high stress, and limited mobility can quickly take a toll on their well-being. Many seniors struggle with appetite loss, anxiety, or joint pain that worsens due to kennel stress.
Their age is not what causes them to decline. Their stress, confusion, and loneliness do.
How Fostering Helps Seniors Thrive
A short foster break can completely transform a senior dog. Even a weekend away can help them decompress, rest deeply, eat better, and show their true personalities. These breaks also give volunteers better insight, photos, and videos to help them get adopted.
You do not need to commit forever to change a senior’s life forever.

Data Note
All numbers listed in this blog reflect the current adoptable population at Manatee County Animal Welfare as of November 23, 2025. Some of the dogs listed may be in foster homes rather than physically present at the shelter. We used the most current data available, but information can change quickly as dogs move into foster, get adopted, or return from breaks.
If you call or visit about a particular dog and discover that they are currently in foster, please allow the shelter team and volunteers a little grace. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work together—imperfectly but wholeheartedly—to help every dog find the safe, loving home they deserve.

Thank you for advocating for the shelter dogs and showing them at their best. I am hoping this page helps them get fostered & adopted. Good work!
Thank you! Apologies for the delay in my response.
